The customer at this Broughton property discovered that their printer had developed a fault and was leaking black ink. Unfortunately, this happened while the printer was being carried downstairs to be taken for repair.
By the time the problem was noticed, ink had dripped and splashed across a large section of the light-coloured wool carpet on the landing.

A Widespread Printer Ink Spill
This was a particularly challenging stain-removal job because the ink was not contained in one small area. It had been transferred across the landing as the faulty printer was moved, creating numerous marks of different sizes.
Some areas contained small droplets, while others had heavier concentrations of ink that had penetrated further into the carpet pile.
Treating each mark individually without spreading the ink into the surrounding light fibres required patience and a controlled approach. Aggressive scrubbing would have risked turning the separate spots into larger dark patches.
Why Wool Carpet Required Extra Care
The affected carpet was wool, which made correct fibre identification especially important.
Wool is a natural, absorbent fibre that can be sensitive to excessive heat, strong cleaning products and aggressive agitation. An unsuitable stain remover could have affected the carpet’s colour or texture, potentially leaving damage that was more difficult to correct than the original ink.
We therefore could not approach this job in the same way as ink or marker on a synthetic carpet. The treatment needed to be carefully controlled and monitored throughout, with realistic expectations discussed before work began.
Permanent ink removal can never be guaranteed, particularly on a light-coloured wool carpet, but the condition and circumstances made professional treatment worth attempting.
Our Approach to Removing the Printer Ink
We began by assessing the carpet and the extent of the spill. The heavier deposits and individual droplets were identified so that they could be treated methodically rather than saturating the entire area.
The ink was worked on progressively using an appropriate specialist treatment. As it began to release from the fibres, the loosened contamination was carefully extracted to reduce the risk of it spreading back into the surrounding carpet.
This process was repeated across the affected landing, giving additional attention to the larger and darker ink deposits. The carpet’s colour and fibre response were checked throughout the treatment.
Once the visible ink had been removed, the area was cleaned and extracted to remove remaining residue and leave a consistent finish across the landing.
An Exceptional Result on a Wool Carpet
The completed result was an enormous improvement. The numerous black spots, smudges and larger ink deposits visible in the original photograph were successfully removed and were no longer obvious under normal viewing.
The light, neutral appearance of the wool carpet was restored without leaving a large discoloured treatment area around the spill.
Considering how widespread and prominent the printer ink had been, this was a particularly satisfying result. Professional treatment saved the customer from having to replace an otherwise serviceable carpet.

What Should You Do if Printer Ink Spills on a Carpet?
If printer ink leaks onto your carpet, avoid rubbing or scrubbing it. This can spread the ink through a wider area and push it deeper into the carpet fibres.
Do not apply several different household stain removers or strong solvents. This is particularly important with wool because unsuitable products can cause colour loss or permanent fibre damage.
If the spill is still wet, carefully blot without rubbing using a clean white absorbent cloth. Then photograph the affected area and contact a professional carpet cleaner as soon as possible. Results will depend on the carpet fibre, ink type, quantity spilt, and any products already applied.
